An interesting native grass for shaded areas, Inland Oatgrass has several names. It is often called Northern Sea Oats as well as my favorite name for it, Fish-On-A-Fishing-Pole. A low maintenance easy to grow perennial, it has graceful arching green-turning-tan colored seedheads that look like flattened oats. Or if you use your imagination, fish. It is a larval host plant for some butterflies and small mammals and birds eat the seeds. This plant is often used in shady spots where nothing else will grow. Sometimes it is best to remove the seedheads later in the season to lessen volunteers.
