A really cool Oklahoma native plant that a lot of people are probably not familiar with is Ten-Petal Mentzelia. Opening in the evening, its flowers are fragrant, glowing white, impressively large (3-6”) and with, you guessed it, ten petals. The center of each blossom is a separate cream to gold color and consists of 200-300 stamens. A biennial or short-lived perennial, it has a strong deep tap root and does not survive transplanting. Its leaves have a rough surface and a bit clingy to clothing. Ten-Petal Mentzalia is best grown in a raised bed and kept on the dry side.
