Verbena peruviana

The thing I like most about this South American perennial is its intense bright red flowers. They seem to just glow. Peruvian Verbena’s form is also quite unique. It is a very low sort of creeping pancake form of a plant with small, fine-textured leaves. Native to Argentina and Brazil, its foliage stays evergreen in mild winters. We grew this in the rock garden at the Oklahoma Gardening studio in the late 90’s early 2000’s. Peruvian Verbena will spread as a ground cover it if has good drainage. Butterflies and hummingbirds are drawn to its bright red flowers.
