It wasn’t too long after I got interested in plants that I discovered the Lily of the Nile. I fell in love with its huge blue umbels that rise on tall stalks above its strap-like leaves. I learned that it isn’t really a Lily (more closely related to an Amaryllis), and that it doesn’t come form the Nile region (actually native to South Africa). Those plants I first admired were tender bulbs that required being indoor during Oklahoma winters. Now gardeners here can enjoy selections like Galaxy Blue as a hardy perennial. I am amazed that this beautiful plant with its 4″ cluster of dark blue flowers is perfectly hardy to zone 6. Blooming in early to mid-summer, it will often rebloom in late summer. Who wouldn’t want this plant in their garden?
