Passiflora incarnata

This species of hardy native vine occurs throughout most of Oklahoma and ranges in color from dark purple to white with numerous shades of lavender in between.  It was given the name of passion Vine (P.incarnata), in reference to the Passion of Jesus Christ.  Parts of the flower resemble a figure on a cross with three spikes and a crown.  Besides its gorgeous flowers, another reason to grow this vine is because it is the only food source for the larvae of the Gulf Fritillary Butterfly, a large attractive orange colored species we have here in Oklahoma.  Understand that these vines will produce root suckers so plant accordingly.  Many gardeners will plant it in a location surrounded by lawn so the sprouts can be mown.
