Most people don?t think about Oklahoma being an area where palms grow, but McCurtain County in the far southeastern corner of the state is home to Dwarf Palmettos. This population o f palms is very unique in that it represents their most inland occurrence making them the most cold hardy and sought after. A type of Fan Palm, the Dwarf Palmeto gives the garden a tropical look with its evergreen fronds arising from a central growth point. You don?t see much of the trunk with these plants because it is mostly subterranean or underground, a characteristic that facilitates its cold hardiness. Be patient, as they do take a while to become established.
