Vitex or Chaste Tree is one of the best summer flowering shrubs for Oklahoma. Its long thick flower spires of rich lilac-blue are very noticeable to people as well as butterflies. Reportedly grown in The South since the late 1600’s, you sometimes see a shrub still growing at old home sites. Grow it as a large shrub, train it as a small tree, or cut it low each spring for a more compact plant.
